Do I want Supplemental Health Insurance?

A supplemental health insurance plan is a health care plan that covers anything above and beyond the medical coverage of your current health insurance plan.

Supplemental health plans can provide added medical coverage, or, can also be purchased to cover costs not covered by your basic health insurance plan, such as co-insurance, co-pays, and deductibles.

Here Are a Few Examples of Supplemental Health Insurance Plan Types:

  • Dental insurance for adults

  • Critical Illness Insurance

  • Vision Insurance Plans

  • Disability Insurance

  • Supplemental Travel Insurance for Healthcare coverage when you are outside your health insurance network

  • Long-term care insurance

  • Short-term health insurance coverage

  • Medicare or Medicaid Supplemental Plans

How Does a Supplemental Health Insurance Plan Work?

Supplemental insurance pays benefits to the insured. Some popular supplemental health insurance policies are disease-specific insurance such as:

  • for cancer

  • accidental death and dismemberment insurance

  • accident health insurance, and hospital indemnity insurance

  • Medigap (Medicare supplemental health insurance)

Examples of Supplemental Health Plans

Critical Illness or Disease-Specific Insurance is supplemental health insurance that provides a cash benefit paid directly to you if you require treatment for a specific disease such as cancer.

Accident Health Insurance or Accidental Death and Dismemberment Supplemental Insurance is a type of supplemental insurance that would reimburse you for medical costs resulting from accidents. Premiums are usually low and accidents can include car accidents, accidents in the home or at your job.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance provides a daily, weekly, or monthly cash benefit if you are confined to a hospital stay. Usually, there is a minimum hospital stay before benefits are paid.
